Wikipedia Artists Biographies

Task: ‘Wikipedia Artists Biographies’ rewrites Hong Kong art history by creating and maintaining English language Wikipedia entries on significant Hong Kong artist. Students identify Hong Kong artists who are not represented in Wikipedia.org.en, research their careers from a range of sources and collaboratively write and defend factual accounts of their work in Wikipedia.

• Learning Objective: Research and write an impartial and factual account of a significant artist for a public resource.
• Digital Literacy: Utilise wiki-based writing/editing platform. Understand how to evaluate source reliability and be publicly accountable for quality information.
• Evidence of student learning: Student groups produced 12 new Wikipedia pages and continued to improve them based on feedback from the Wikipedia editing community after class. 3 weeks later and the majority of pages created were considered of sufficient standard to remain (and flagged for only minor changes and additions), and only 2 pages were deleted. While 1 page had proven so popular it had been the site of considerable activity and expansion.
