Task: ‘#PhotoEssayHK’ is a narrative scavenger hunt taught through Whatsapp. Students are each sent to different starting locations and then fed a series of tasks which seem random but provide a narrative arc for them to illustrate.
- Learning Objective: Mine everyday experiences and immediate locations for material that can be used in fictional and creative non-fictional writing. Construct a collaborative visual narrative in real-time.
- Digital Literacy: Utilise photo-sharing platform for specific collaborative task. Understand the performative nature of self-representation on social media.
- Evidence of student learning: Out of a class of 17 students, 4 students discovered that in addition to participating in the over-arching collaborative narrative, they could turn images into micro-narratives, developing their own self-driven sub-plot. This demonstrates how task facilitated the development of real-time narrative competency while encouraging the development of advanced level skills in transmedia storytelling.
